The population of the Sokoto caliphate formed by Hausas in the northern Nigeria and Cameroon was half-slave in the 19th century. So, in that sense, the current of Black self-emancipation was important, but it had clear limits. In fact, Africans were still being held in slave pens in Saudi Arabia into the 1960's. In Western Europe slavery largely disappeared by the later Middle Ages, although it still remained in such manifestations as the use of slaves on galleys.
