The Mexican Americans of the Southwest were gradually overwhelmed in numbers by Anglo newcomers from the East. (Anglo is a term used by Hispanics to describe all white non-Hispanic Americans.) In about 1910 the next era began with the start of massive emigration from Mexico itself. They became known as Patriots, or Whigs, and they included Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. The importance of education is shown very clearly in Table 28. The most basic test is citizenship; broadcast licenses cannot be held by non-citizens, foreign corporations, foreign governments, or any company in which non-citizens hold one-fifth of the stock.
