Most of the environmental problems are well known though we may not have found solution for all. The average life expectancy is four-fifths that of the average person in an advanced country. McCloskey's studies of the rhetoric of economics have been valuable and influential (1985, esp. ch. 5–7), but much of her work consists not of such studies but of philosophical critiques of economic methodology. Among the multiplicity of contenders for this designation are: the organization and control of the economic system, the efficient (or optimum) allocation of resources, economic growth, maximization of welfare, distribution of income (and wealth), and the ordinary business of life in terms of earning a living.
