The 1816 Upper Canada Land Petition of Williams sister Catherine contains an affidavit stating that William also served with the Incorporated Militia during the War of 1812. While there were articles and references to other European countries, the most numerous of the European references were of French articles and French culture. Had the United States successfully conquered Canada, ‘there could have been no Canadian confederation of the sort that was formed in 1867’ (p. 155).
