Many of these groups drafted their own decrees saying that they wanted to be promoted under the same conditions as whites, have representation in the Assembly, and let black and mulattos serve in the government.

They were also afforded the opportunity to file complaints with the British consul in Suriname, which they did often (especially women). The shadow of slavery still loomed; new arrivals were warned about the dangers of vaccination, which, they said, left 'an inextinguishable mark thereby forever preventing their leaving the Isthmus'.

On May 15th, the National Assembly succumbed to pressure and granted political rights to all free blacks and mulattos who were born of free mothers and fathers. The Portuguese found captured Africans to be a valuable trading commodity as Europeans began to settle the Caribbean islands. In 1840, the World Anti-Slavery Convention was organised in London that attracted delegates from around the world (including from the United States of America, in the South of which slavery was at times referred to as "our peculiar institution ") to the Freemasons' Hall, London on 12 June 1840.
