Based on what I found in my own research, I feel that other historians have not emphasized this dynamic enough when discussing the factors that led to support for emancipation. Constitution allowed for an end to the importation of slaves in 1808 – though the framers were careful to do so without using the word “slave.” But a technological innovation reinvigorated slavery and set it at the center of the nation’s economy and politics for seventy years: the cotton gin. Nor is it likely that Lincoln would have ever backed down from the proclamation, even in the face of the courts.”228 Guelzo wrote that “we underestimate the political courage it took for Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and then stand behind it.

[23] Britain used its influence to coerce other countries to agree to treaties to end their slave trade and allow the Royal Navy to seize their slave ships. [24] [25] In the 1820s, the abolitionist movement revived to campaign against the institution of slavery itself.
