I'm sure that if you went through the early years of Jazz you could find a lot of swing players on any instrument that could not read a note since a great number of them were not 'trained musicians' a lot of Basie's band members did not read and the band used riffs and headcharts for Blues and I got Rhythm tunes to create their repetior for a while in the beginning.
