Hungerford has good problems and examples, and is very systematic, but rather boring, and gives little insight into why things are true, in my opinion, but some of my best students did benefit from it in combination with other books. They may incorporate rules and properties that are not followed by the ordinary numbers, and may even break the rules followed by ordinary numbers, such as the commutative law of multiplication (i.e. a x b = b x a).
